Merc 470 alpha 1 the last cou

Merc 470 alpha 1 the last couple of times out on a good hard run 3/4 ppl the temp gauge will read 150/160 for the most part but when im on a long run 6to7 miles at about 4200 rpms it gets up to 170 is this ok or should i change the thermostat. never noticed this before but never ran it for long trips either plz let me know what ya think

Steve:

170 F. on a long run

Steve:

170 F. on a long run is not much to worry about. Does the temp. drop to 160 F. when you reach the end of the run and let the engine idle to cool? Is the belt tight and not slipping on the circulation pump? An old belt will slip. I don't believe the thermostat is malfunctioning. I would think that the 10 deg. temp rise is related to the heat exchanger's ability to cool the engine coolant. It may need the cooling tubes cleaned.

Guy. yes it does return to abo

Guy. yes it does return to about 160 after i get out of the throttle and just cruz it takes a good lengnth of time to reach 170. but does return to 160 rather quickly. im not sure what belt you are refering to for the cerculating pump unless its internal. i dont see any belts. im running the stator charging system. it doesnt seem to afect the performance just didnt want to be creeping up on a problem that i could catch early
thanks for your input GUY

I think guy is referring to yo

I think guy is referring to your main alt/wp belt on the front of the engine.
