"Hello everyone.

"Hello everyone.
I recently bought a used 16.5' fiberglass with a 60hp Mariner on it. Don't know much about it, seems to work fine, mabye charging a bit high (16.9 volts @ WOT). The guy told me it was a 1988 model. The serial number is A715120.
Can anyone tell me anything about this motor? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks."

"Looks like a 1985 or early 86

"Looks like a 1985 or early 86 Canadian serial (definately not an 88, but don't matter much, they were mechanically identical).

16.9 does sound a touch high, normally expect to see 13.5-14 volts at the battery while running.

Identical to a 60 Merc of the same vintage - just different paint/decals."

"Thanks Graham. Spent a lot of

"Thanks Graham. Spent a lot of time reading posts on this board. First thing I did was pull the Autoblend, that thing was making me nervous anyway.
The other issue I seem to be having with this motor is that, after zipping across the lake, i.e. the engine is warm, it doesn't seem to want to idle. As soon as I take it out of gear, it sputters and dies. If I shut it down before it dies, it'll start no prob when I'm ready to go again, when it catches I have to quickly put it in gear and go. I've only had 2 trips with this motor and both times it would idle OK when I first start it, let it warm up a little and then go. But again, after it's warm, no idle.
Other than that, the motor works great."

"Possibly some crud in the fue

"Possibly some crud in the fuel system, or the carb is just starting to flood (common if it's been sitting for a while).

Since it isn't horrible yet, try running Seafoam (or similar product) with the gas.

These gas additives do no good once a problem is full blown, but are fairly decent as a preventative. There is a number available from marine dealers that make all sorts of wild claims, but for the most part, they do get the "cooties" out of the system if it's not a solid clog..."

"I have some STP complete fuel

"I have some STP complete fuel system treatment, would that work just as well? I also have some spray carb cleaner, should I try that too?

I apologize if these are no brainer questions. I have little to no experience with gasoline systems, and carbuerators are a complete mystery to me, all the engine work I've done has been 99% diesel work.

Thanx for all the help."

"Sure, give them a try - most

"Sure, give them a try - most are just alcohol when you get right down to it..."

"just an update, I added STP c

"just an update, I added STP complete fuel system treatment to the fuel and had the boat on the lake all day last Saturday. I think it helped. About 3/4 of the way through the day, it would idle in neutral- something it wouldn't do before. It only sputtered out once all day. Thanx for the help Graham!

PS- I also changed the sparkplugs, turns out the guy before me had the wrong ones in according to the repair manual. That probably helped as well."
