"Finally Problem Solved - No Power Under Load - Johnson 70hp.

Well I'd just like to say that I finally solved the problem with my 1978 Johnson 70hp with no power under load. I was about to purchase a Suzuki DT55 outboard along with trading my 70hp when the seller asked if I had the title to my outboard. I said no and he asked if I could track down the old owner first. Boy I'm sure glad he asked. In talking with the previous title owner he said he sold the boat and motor because it started giving him carb problems. After that it changed ownership about 2 or 3 times.

Well I got 3 new used carbs put on and now my 70hp purrs like a kitten and has power across the power range!!! Even a thorough carb cleaning did not have any effect.

Oh and the last title owner, the person I talked to is going to work with me to get the title transfered to my name.

Thanks for all the advice. I now know that if there is power issues or carb issues, you might want to think about replacing them if after a good cleaning the problem still occurs.

Good luck!

"JR.... I've never encountered a carburetor that cleaning properly didn't cure the problem. Some day, if you become curious if anything might have been overlooked, ship me those carburetors. I'd be interested in stripping them down, looking for something out of the ordinary. Click on my name and go the email route should you be interested."

"I have had exactly the same experience. Cleaned the $%^& out of them, and still no luck. A new-used set straightened out my 235 Johnson. I'm guessing that I should have removed the welch plugs(?) and that there may have been some inaccessible crud behind them."

Nothing goes wrong with outboa

Nothing goes wrong with outboard carburetors. The only thing is many people ( not all ) do not know which parts and what to clean.Dirt is the only enemy.

"The outboard mechanic I took

"The outboard mechanic I took my motor too is good. He is not the one I originally purchased the motor from, he is a different one. I watched him take the entire carbs apart and placed in an ultra sonic cleaning tub and sit over night. Using a flash light he inspected each passage way. The only visable damage was the low speed orfice screws. One has a stripped head, but the passage way is clean.

I'm surprise the cleaning of the carbs didn't fix it before. But I can say that my motor runs like it should with the new set of carbs. I gave the olds to my mechanic as I didn't want them."

"Sleeper,

There is no doubt

"Sleeper,

There is no doubt about it; welch plugs are there so that you can access tiny orifices in order to clean them. When rebuilding any carb, all welch plugs and lead plugs must be removed.

"EVINRUDE83,

I'd first get the carbs cleaned very good before I start looking at the pump. If the engine is running the pump is working.

One of my carbs had a damaged orfice screw and was not removable. That's the reason I decided to replace my carbs after having them thoroughly cleaned already.

92 Evinrude 40 hsp I bought this fall with very low hours(10-15) previous owner says he mixed oil 50-1 because he didn't trust the attached oil system. Any way to check system without damaging what is a new engine? Running in a tank-lots of oil in the tank after short run and much smoke. Any advice would be helpful. thanks
