Can anyone tell me how to test

Can anyone tell me how to test the overheat warning system on a 1998 ficht 175 v6. The horn sounds as it should when i first start motor. If I ground the single wire that looks to be the temp sensor all I get is a idiot light lit?? Mike

Thanks for the info. As a precaution as I am still not sure why this engine failed and burnt up the top stbrd piston I installed a engine temp guage on that cylinder head. The port head had a drilled out fitting for a sensor but not the strbd side. I took a chance and drilled one out in the same location and it worked. So now I should see what the real temp is on the most vunerable cyclider?
