Hey Y'all,
I'm a noob here, glad I found this resource, lots of good knowledge. Hope one of you can walk me thru and check my usually fuzzy logic. Nearest dealer is around an hour away, and I like to do things myself but this is magically powered by fuel injection. I haven't had a single problem up to date and still consider it new. I apologize in advance for the length.
My 2012 40 hp has had what I suspected was an electrical issue while under power. Sudden power loss, like you pulled the lanyard. No sputter like it was a fuel issue, I have run dry more than once and know that feeling well, this was like a kill switch, sudden. After starting fine and idle normal while warming up, then quit on plane the first time. I checked the bulb, firm. Pulled the cowl and checked fuses and fuel at separator, both fine, I dumped the separator anyway, pumped it back up, still no start.
Back at the house it popped right off with the muffs on it. That's why I figured it was electrical. Cooled down and started fine. Checked all connections, everything under cowl that were accessible, and then wanted to eliminate anything I could elsewhere so I: emptied and dried my 6gal tank, checking filter, line, check ball, fittings, vent, all lines under cowl. Oil level correct, piss hole working fine, no warning lamps or buzzers when it quits. It started and idled fine at the house.
Back to the lake, same thing happened but quicker this time, while at idle and not yet fully warm. It would restart and idle for a couple of minutes then die suddenly. Did it about 10 times while I farted with everything I could think of. Finally no start.
Back to the house. Rechecked my work, new plugs, pulled and tested each fuse with multimeter. Starts fine on muffs cold.
Back to the lake, starts fine then quits after 3-4 minutes. Will not start again.
Back home. This is time I pulled the interior filter on the side of the pump, the little one they call a strainer, and replaced it, because that was the only thing I could think of. Rechecked everything, no start. I can hear the fuel pump whine when I turn the key to the run position, but I went to recheck my work and pulled the drain/check bolt from the filter housing and no fuel. Turned it on and off a few times but nada.
Questions: I haven't bought a manual because this is the only machine I have ever owned that the owners manual was all I needed for he first five years. That pump should blow fuel out of that drain hole when it primes, right? So was my fuel pump going out gradually the whole time? Can I rebuild it? My warranty is good until next month, conveniently enough, but dealer says 3-4 weeks to get it back. Anything y'all can think of that I haven't? I have had a boat for 20 years, and can't believe I missed anything stupid because I have already done all of them, but this my first 4 stroke fuel injected outboard so ya know...
thanks in advance, y'all help me save summer...
