"Hey, I have a few questions about a boat I just got, It has an 80's Model Merc 150HP on it, Runs like a champ so far. I was told it just had a new water pump installed, I hooked it up seems to be working, It is putting a good amount of water out of the exahust which i guess is good, but the Pee hole is not squirting any out, It appears to not be hooked up, no hose going to it, Is that a problem? or does it matter?

Ok Next question is for the prop, It seems to be just a little lose, I mean its on there tight, but I can wiggle it just a tad, I know thats prob not normal or is that ok?

And one last thing, Not on the motor, but on the console, The Tach, It stays at 5000RPM, even when the engine is not running, I guess its stuck. Does that mean I need a new tach? Or can that be fixed?

Well those are the Few things that I am main concerned about right now before I take it out in the water. Any help would be greatly appreciated so I can get this out on the water.

Thanks, Mark"

"Mark, the pee hole should be

"Mark, the pee hole should be hooked up, it should run from both your thermostats to the bottom of the back cowl. Mine was plugged by debris from insects once. I believe a little movement in the prop is ok as long as the prop nut is torqued correct. Check your wiring for the tach, if all is ok then the tach is likely stuck, common on older tachs. I would replace it myself, not too expensive and a must have on a larger motor. Just my suggestions, the other guys on here are great and know so much more than I. Good luck"

"Thanks for the info man, App

"Thanks for the info man, Apperently the guy I got the boat has been running the boat with out the pee hole hooked up and it has been running great, So is that something that I need to hook back up to have it running correctly? Or will it be fine without it? Yes I tach is a must have, I will just have to go over the wires and see if something is wrong, it is a quicksilver tach so It should be no problem for a replacement. My main concern is main the the pee hole, you can never be too careful when it comes to cooling, just let me know what you think or know abou that... Thanks again"

"I actually had the same probl

"I actually had the same problem from Dirt-Daubers (black mud wasps) I had to blow every line out of my 83 150 (by mouth) I heard it gurgle a bit and then hooked the muffs up to for the water supply, started it and then the little "tattle-tale" stream started flowing, spurting at first and then a stream. Hook that line up to the back of the cowl."

"ohh ok thanks, The thing is I

"ohh ok thanks, The thing is I have no line going to hook up on the back of the cowl, that is why I am wondering where it hooks up to or if I even need it? I was told to each thermostat but I dont see any hook ups for it? I have two big hoses coming off my thermostats then goes into what looks like a pump, but i dont know let me know what you think."

"Well after further examinatio

"Well after further examination, I did find out where it is suppose to hook up to, I have my old boat still, with the blown motor, Just sitting around and it has a little newer 150 on it. The place where the pee hole hooks up to at the very bottom of the engine block has a plug in it, It looks to have come from the factory like that, The paint on it still looks new. I still would like to know if I need it and I could take the hoses and adapters off my other motor and put them on this one."

I would think if they intercha

I would think if they interchange properly why not as long as you are still getting the "tattle-tale" stream. I would concentrate on that.

"Yeah I mean if it didnt need

"Yeah I mean if it didnt need it, It would not hurt to put the hoses and fittings on there?"

"after boating a while,it come

"after boating a while,it comes natural to see that stream coming out of the back of the motor, when its not there someone notices quickly,i highly suggest you connect one,ive only worked on 7-8 different motors, but i have never seen one without the tattle tale, and my self if if it was brand new,if it was possible i would put one on it,just to know it was circulating water."

"The last three motors I have

"The last three motors I have had did not come with that hole, But they were johnsons and chryslers, Not really my fav kinds of motors. Like I said from what I can see it never did have one of those hooked up from the factory, Just the slot for the hole... but Like I said I have a blown Merc 150 that is a little newer that has all the stuff to put on... I guess I will do it and see how it works, and if it is no good I will change it back.... so what is the purpose of the pee hole?? I mean will it hurt it if I put it on and it is not suppose to be?"

"i cant see why it would hurt,

"i cant see why it would hurt,im pretty sure its soul purpose is to let you know the water pump is working.it wont hurt to not have it,till the water pump goes and you dont know and warp a head or worse."

"yeah thats true it couldnt hu

"yeah thats true it couldnt hurt and since I have the parts why not do it right... I have had a powerhead go out on me before, I took my old boat the the shop to have the water pump replaced, was suppose to be the whole kit and all, well the motor blew first time I took it out after that, And I took lower unit off and the housing was cracked not allowing enough suction for the water, I was so pissed but u know how the shops are, its never there fault, so I have been doing it myself, My last water pump was easy to do."
