"I am a newbie to boats and in the process of dealing on a used one, it has a 1987 Evinrude 70 with VRO. The seller has openly told that the VRO system is faulty and does not work. He said that it failed by staying open and not closing which was one good thing. So apparently it has been "plugged off" and he has been mixing the oil and gas. He openly told me that the boat shop said it is about $459 for a new injection pump. It is on a 17Ft bowrider which is in pretty good shape(same year). This being my first boat, shoulc I be aware of anything to do with this issue? Good quality engine or not? VRO bad or good? Need new engine or not? Sorry for all the questions but my knowledge of boat engines is fairly limited and I just want to make a informed decision. Thanks."

there are some real simple things that can lead a service shop to automatically start quoting for VRO pump - there'aenough profit in the pump that the leaky hose you fix whilst in there gets covered.
There's a great youtube video showing the ills of a leaking hose.
All that said - I have premixed since day 1 on mine - I don't see the need for complexity on a 2 stroke - I bought 2 stroke because I wanted simple... I also have a trolling motor I run off the same fuel tank so I gotta premix anyways

Yes keep it simple is best. The VRO itself is a well built unit. The problem appears in the extra warning systems / potential for leaking hoses / plugged filters / pinched hoses and who needs it.Mix at 50:1 and forget about trouble and a ruined motor.

"before u buy,if u can,..have it checked out at a shop...very important!!!.. i just had an old fellow in this week that got taken bad on a salty dog late 80's 88....boat is decent....started in YARD....sounded good to him...it needs about all the maintenence u can imagine, bad motor mounts, weak water pump, prop etc,etc......the eng u r looking at is a good one as long as it has been taken care of,and is not wore out.
If u purchase,..have it serviced right outa the gate, water pump, tune up,at the least..."
