External voltage regulator vs one wire alternator

Chrysler 5.9L 275 hp gas inboard with Amptech 100A alternator and Next Step external voltage regulator - not charging (AGM batteries).

Jumped 12v to field and got alternator output so I’m figuring the regulator is bad.

Next step is out of business so looking at other products like Balmar ARS 5. It’s more expensive and complicated that a new one wire alternator.

This forum has many experienced contributors so please allow a lifelong sailor some latitude.

I think I’d rather replace the alternator and external regulator with a one wire alternator.

Our house load at anchor will be minimal (LED anchor and cabin lights) so we probably won’t need high output during a day of powering.

The question:

Does this make sense and what should we do?

Your choice...if you don't go the 1 wire route, just make sure the regulator is compatible with the AGM batteries...most have a max voltage limit ... when its exceeded, the battery life shortens..
