THE ENGINE BURNS NO OIL, STARTS GOOD AND RUNS UP TO 3800 RPM WITH NO MISS IT ALSO IDLES GREAT.THE ENGINE IS A 1973 440 CLOSED COOLING THE EXHAUST IS THE ORIGINAL,COULD THIS BE THE PROBLEM? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT...THANKS"

"I would pull the exhaust elbo

"I would pull the exhaust elbows and risers. They are probably almost completely clogged with rust. If they are truely original, I would just replace them. I blew an engine on an old boat because I did not know to check for this about every 5-7 years.

The black soot could be from your exhaust and being sucked back into the raw water intake. Just a guess on the soot."
