Exhaust seal orientation

When I pulled the lower unit off my Mercury Classic Fifty the exhaust tube seal was installed with the plastic tabs of the base plate facing down into the lower unit (like picture A). It seamed to fit properly and allowed the plastic base plate to sit flush against the rubber seal. However, when looking at the schematics it looks like the base plate tabs face up and mate against the smooth surface of the rubber seal (like orientation B). When I try inserting them like they are shown in the schematic the fit seems janky. So my question is which way is the proper way to install these two pieces? Orientation A or B?

In case anyone wants written proof this is what is written in the selected manual. And it is the way mine was installed. The Crowley diagram is wrong.

Rule of thumb is don’t go by the parts catalog for correct orientation as it’s usually not the most accurate but more geared to show the parts general design for ordering comparisons vs how they sit in place on the item… We’re supposed to trust the service manual for those types of tips… though while rare, they could be not the most accurate either to where the manual may be corrected in a later version or a bulletin put out so that hopefully someone at the dealership will write in ‘or place the corrected information in the right area needed… scary I know, so try to watch how it comes apart if you know it’s been working correctly already.

I just took my unit apart and the support plate was previously installed like photo A, with the flat side up, against the exhaust tube seal...who knows who assembled it last but it seems to fix better with the flat side up...
