Exhaust Riser replacement issue

"ok, the 'touch' temps on my Manifolds on one engine are getting hot and the risers are too. it's been 4 years and it's time to take them off on both engines for inspection/replacement.

Is it standard to replace the risers? or can they be cleaned up, inspected and re-installed?

same question on the exhaust manifolds.

how can you tell if the manifolds/risers are still usable vs. replacement?

Also, i think FastJeff mentioned in the past about using long threaded studs to make installation easier. where can i get those?

"You make the long studs out of 5/16 threaded rod. I put a slot in the end for a screw driver to get them out.

You might have rust plugging up the passages inside the risers. Hot tank cleaning would eliminate that, but if you boat in salt water, it's time for new parts.

I pressure test my manifolds and etc before installing them, or if I suspect something is leaking. Requires making block off plates out of 1/4 inch steel and some ingenuity. Fill with colored water (windshield fluid) and pressurize with air to 15 psi.

"yes, i was planning on getting new risers. but, i wasn't sure of the est. life of the manifolds, they were new in 2006, so, i'll test them out. thanks for the help Jeff!!"
 
I had my manifolds sitting for

I had my manifolds sitting for about three years with no use. I removed the manifolds & elbows & cleaned them really good. I had a lot of rust in them. I used a long thin wire brush like they use to clean boilers out. I can put my hand on them even after the engine has reach 160 degrees without pulling them away. They run nice & cool.
