Exhaust elbow temperature sensors

The exhaust elbows on my 2007 5.0 MPI Crusaders came with temperature sensors. While shopping for replacements I see that the new OEM ones are not tapped for the senders. The instructions are to tape back the wires as they are no longer needed on these, or used on new engines. When I first installed the engines I thought the temperature sensors on the elbow were a good idea. The elbow would be the first thing to see any loss of raw water cooling flow long before any rise in the fresh water coolant temperature. My Murphy power views report elbow temperature around 130. Seems to be the loss of a good feature to save a few bucks on drilling and tapping the elbows.

I agree with you. I almost had a boat fire well offshore when one riser plugged and overheated enough rubber hose to almost burn thru. Sensor switches on both would have alerted me to the issue.
 
I have a sensor on EACH riser on BOTH engines, so I'm with you.

On drilling and tapping, however, I would be very careful--unless the old, untapped boss is still there. Then, go at it!

PS: One final pint that EVERYONE should be aware of: Temp sensors need to be tested. I went through 6 BRAND NEW sensors before finding one that worked! Running a boat with dead sensors is as bad and no sensors, and testing (in a pot of boiling water) is the only way to be safe. It cost me a 50 hrs old motor to find that out.
