"i dont have my manual handy my buddy is using it.how hard to replace all rubber bellows,etc.what are the names of the things i should replace and what to use.1975 mercruiser 165hp straight 6 cylinder."

"If your's is like my 1979 Merc 470, the job is a bit*h. I have to do it in a boathouse, so it would be much easier on dry land. You need a hoist, motor lift or healthy gorilla to handle the outdrive weight. The hardest part for me was getting the new large bellows over the driveshaft housing of the motor. Just not enough space to get both hands in there to spread the bellows over the casting, which, BTW, has VERY sharp edges. I was bleeding a bit at the finish line. I think Merc offers a Special Tool (surprise?) that spreads the thing easily. I made a jig using four sticks hot-glued to a tennis ball. That helped some. The other steps are not too bad.

"You can get a transom service

"You can get a transom service kit that has all the parts you need to replace.
Basically you should replace the gimbal bearing, U Joint bellows, exhaust bellows, shift cable bellows and the rubber water inlet hose at a minimum.
You will need a hinge pin tool.
If there is any doubt about the condition of your trim stop switch and your trim indicator sender, this is a good time to change them too.
Same applies for the lower shift cable.
Also check your U joints and change them if loose or stiff or rusty.
Change out your water pump impeller while you have the drive leg off.

"help! i have an old 470 mecruiser and the exhust manifold is rusted out,im told this part is no longer available. can another manifold be monifide easily to be used on my older engine? there is a stainless one that is available but the manifold alne s alost $2000, i dont want to spend too much, the rest of the engine is in perfect condition and i quite like it, what should i do?"
