  1. I am new to boating and posted this question on the 24th of this month, I was just wondering is there a reason it has not been answered ? Even if I am told to go away at least it's an answer.
Greetings all ;
I am new to this forum and have a few questions. I just bought a Mariner 40 attached to a 14' fiberglass boat. I have a serial number but need to know information about it. The number is 6E9L417110. What can you tell me about this engine? What is the fuel mixture, also I have read stuff like a 50:1 mixture, is that the same stuff you would use for like weedeater and chain saw fuel, and is that for a 6 gal tank (just one of those small containers)? I also read one post that said something about a TCW-3 is that another kind of oil to be added also with fuel?
I am not a total box of rocks just a first time boat owner. Thank you

Mix at a ratio of 50 parts gasoline and one part oil !!!!!----------TCW-3 outboard motor oil too --------------Don't be fooled by small oil containers for chainsaws / weed eaters that are marketed for occasional use to mix with one tank on the device.

Thank you Racerone. I need more information on something else. The trolling motor that came with the boat has a foot controll that the previous owner told me was froze but the motor still worked fine. I have looked all through the device and can not find out how many thrust pounds it is supposed to put out. All I know is that the top motor cover has evinrude stickers on it. On the foot pedal I found these numbers.
MOD: HBF2G99 and a serial # H02965865 can you tell me anything about this information? Where can I find information online? I have tried looking but it is difficult when I have nothing else to go on.
Thank you for your assistance.

I have no experience with them---------------I won one as a door prize years ago , sold it before it was taken out of the box.

Sorry for the lack of responses and welcome to the forum, I am no boat mechanic but outboards that are not fuel injected use the 50 to 1 ratio like Racer one said.

also might want to google ehtanol effects on marine fuel and phase separation and think about adding a fuel stabilizer like sta-bil marine or startron.

I can't help you with serial numbers, know nothing about this place, just googled it, they have a 1-800 phone number maybe they can help with the trolling motor?

hope this helps.

You may want to befriend a person who has a boat. To be a first time owner, with a used boat, I would think could be quite an experience. I've been a boat owner since the late '50's. and there's always something to do with a boat, repairs, maintenance etc...Its still fun.... if you like boats...BF

Hi there, Your engine serial number 6E9 (00417110) shows this engine to be a (1985) MARINER 40 EL, Engine model number 7040525. Long Shaft.

Here are the parts for this engine serial number.

Thanks everyone for your contribution to this thread. I have learned a lot and have several things to consider. Thanks for the tip on the oil although when I bought the boat the prior owner had showed me a Qt of Pennzoil that he had been using to mix in the fuel, Just he was too old to remember what the mixture was that he used. I have always been the kind of guy who sticks to one brand of oil once started. So I think I am going to stay with Pennzoil.
Should I post a new thread for each item I have questions on? Such as fuel, winteriazation, lubing and stuff like that? Thanks again ya,ll have been very helpful.

YouTube has a multitude of short videos on winterization and gearlube replacement; many by dealers. Fuel should be a minimum of 87 octane. IDGASAOO but stay away from gasohol w/an old motor. The 1985 fuel parts were not designed for alcohol. If you have to use it, do so sparingly until you can get regular fuel.

Pennzoil is good oil. Just be sure you get the marine oil rated TCW3. TCW3 stands for Two Cycle Water cooled, 3rd revision. Also your motor will be fine using E10 regular gas but install a water seperator filter between the tank and the motor. My 1982 Merc 150 has been running fine on it for about 14 years now. I do use Sea Foam regularly in all my motors but I'm sure there are other brands that work just as well.

Thanks again for the advise. About fuel there is a station near my house that sells NO Ethanol gas. Would you advise using that strickly? If so that will be the only kind I will use; other than that I will probably use the mid grade 89 octane gas at any station.

Great thanks a lot that is going to be fine with me because I only use non ethanol fuel for my lawnmower, chain saw and weed eaters . It will be easier to remember to just buy only that type gas for everything except an automobile.
