Excessive water from lower unit

Good afternoon, I have a 2005 Yamaha 70hp 2stroke outboard. When I bought the boat the water pump was not replaced properly. I ordered all new parts and put it together. It’s tell tale is okay but not what I would expect and I see a lot of water coming up through where the shift linkage shaft is. Is this normal for the model. I have done no less than 30 water pumps and don’t recall ever seeing this to the level it is.

Make sure you have a good seal at the water pipe to housing grommet connection. Did you put a small dab of grease to the grommet in the housing?

I did do a little grease. Got it flowing better today after pulling the foot again and the thermostat and then blowing water through the motor. I didn’t see anything come out but it’s definitely flowing better.
