"I have a 1994 Merc 150hp on which the oil injector pump gear went bad.Pump removed and cover plate put on. I now pre mix 1 qt to 12 gallons gas.
Engine runs fine, but on start every time a huge cloud of smoke which eventually clears up. Makes me feel like I'm polluting the whole neighborhood!
Any suggestions as to why this should smoke so much just on startup, or any way to correct it.

"Hi Homer,
If there is a bit of a lay over between starts there is going to be some oil lying in the carbs thus your smoke. Can't work out if 1 quart to 12glns is 50:1.Brain fussy.

"Homer, as Noel states, the gas remaining in the system when you shut down evaporates leaving the oil behind.

Additionally, since you removed the oiler, you now get 50:1 mixed gas in the system all the time, whereas, with the oiler it was varied to make it a little more efficient (and pollute less).

You could move up to a very good quality synthetic oil and that would alleviate the smoke to some degree - but to save money, the only option is point the bow into the wind when you fire it up - don't get rid of the smoke, but at least you don't gag on it...."
