Hi
seems to be a popular problem this one , I have a 90 hp v4 which starts great out of the water also runs great in the water until I stop it then it will not start until it's back on the trailer then it flashes up again driving me mad ,any advise would be gratefully appreciated regards Dave

Dave... Normally that problem is due to a failing stator (under the flywheel) which is the beginning of the ignition system. When cold, the failing stator may provide the proper AC voltage to the powerpack capacitor, but when hot... actually overheated... a voltage drop takes place which results in weak, erratic, and eventually no ignition.

When running, there is a bit or air circulation in that area... BUT... when you shut it down temporarily, the water drains out of the powerhead and all of the engine's heat rises to that flywheel/stator area.

Usually a stator at this stage will be dripping a sticky looking substance down on the timer base and the powerhead area. Check it out closely visually (especially at the extreme front and rear portion) and with a ohm meter.

Joe,

Could it be also that the engine is overheating from poor cooling water circulation due to clogged passages?
