Evinrude XP150 Prop Problem

" My brother has a 1987 XP150 on 17' 6" Cajun bass boat. The boat has no hole shot but runs good top end at good rpm's. Engine height seems to be good. His prop is four blade 23 pitch. His hub is smaller than the hub of the foot and lets exhaust come over the hub of his prop. I thought a thru hub prop was to direct all exhaust thru the hub. Is it possible this prop is wrong for this motor? He just bought the boat and we have tried my prop, a 3 blade 26, and it is too much for his boat. All help is appreciated.

" I would think that for the configuration you describe, 23 pitch is max on speed with a fair shot out of the hole. If you want power, you will probably need to back down on that pitch a bit.
The hub configuration sounds right, but can't tell what brand prop. Do you have the numbers off the hub? "
 
Merc made a small hub prop th

Merc made a small hub prop that would let the exhaust go over the prop. Maybe someone put and evinrude hub in a merc prop. Try and find a 23 Viper prop. I have a 21 pitch viper and they are good props with excellent top speeds.
