"I am experiencing starting problems with the engine. It will start from cold first time with choke but it will not idle and then stall (sometimes we can open the trottle if we are very quick between removing the choke!) . There is a red coloured lever switch on top of the carb which appears to be a fuel cut off switch (??)and turning this fully clockwise sorts the problem most of the time!! However, if we have the engine stopped for more than 30mins or so we have the same problem starting it again and the ensues a 10min effort to get it started again.
Can anyone offer their help & suggestions to this recurring problem as we use the boat for fishing so we are constantly stopping & starting the engine!!

Many thanks"

The thingy with the red lever

The thingy with the red lever is the electric primer ( choke )When the electric part is working you do not need to operate the red lever. The red lever is for manually operating the primer should you have to start the motor by hand ( dead battery ).Start the trouble shooting with a compression test and check that you have spark at each cylinder that will jump a gap of 7/16". I know the habits of these motors.

Thanks for your post.

Thanks for your post. Under normal conditions for electronic starting do you know what position the red lever should be in?

Does this lever have any effect on the engine when running?

This would explain why the engine starts when we move this lever around!

Thanks

If you leave it in the wrong p

If you leave it in the wrong place fuel will run thru it and into the motor ( bypassing the carburetor ) It normally points straight to the back of the unit. If when you move the lever and the motor smooths out that is where it should be all the time

If we have been leavin

If we have been leaving it in the wrong position whilst running could this be a reason for excessive fuel consumption which we have been experiencing? We have been leaving it at the 3 o'clock position when viewed from inside the boat (i.e. fully clockwise). Cheers.
