Evinrude Triumph 70 HP Year?

I have a Evinrude Triumph 70hp and trying to find the year.
Also having a load "knocking" sound. I'm thinking it might be a gear as there were larger metal shavings on the oil drain screw.
Can anyone suggest something? Am I going to spend more trying to fix this than what the engine is worth?

Small plate on outside portion of the port transom bracket will have the model and serial number on it.

What is the model number?

Knocking? Do the followiing.

(Piston Play Check)
(J. Reeves)

This procedure will tell you if there is any wear or play in the Wrist Pin, Wrist Pin Bearing, or Connecting Rod to Crankshaft area.

Remove the spark plugs. Insert a screwdriver, dowel, punch, or some object of your choice through the s/plug hole and into the cylinder/piston area. Hold the tool lightly against the top of the piston. Turn the flywheel by hand, bringing the piston up to top dead center, then continue turning the flywheel to pull the piston down about a inch..... all the while holding the tool lightly against the piston top.

Now, at the point whereas the piston has been dropped down about a inch, grab the flywheel and hold it firmly. Now, push that tool solidly and firmly against the piston top.

If the piston moves without moving the flywheel, there is a problem (wear, play, clearance, etc) somewhere with the items mention in the first sentence. Be sure to check all of the pistons/cylinders.

Engine must be a 74' or a 75'.
I have the 73' Triumph, but it is a 65 HP. I have the 76' 70 HP also but they dropped the Triumph label by then.
PS, listen to Joe, he knows his stuff.
My 73' sat for 17 years. I am now on my 3rd season largely due to him and others on this site.
Parts are widely available if you have the time and patience to work on them.
Get the factory manual, a reprint from this site if necessary, if you do decide to tackle it.

Wow, thanks for the quick responses.
Here is what I found out. My motor serial seems to match a 74 Evinrude Triumph 70hp Model Number: 70473M
I pulled out the lower unit and the gear assembly. No easy task getting the "C" rings out.
Then found the forward gear and pinion were missing a few teeth. This seems to coincide with the noise as it only made the noise in forward gear, not in reverse.

Is this likely a wear and tear issue or is there a bigger problem that could have cause the gear to get chewed up?
Lastly, can you link me to a the following parts:
Foward Gear Assembly: #51 — 385567 — 385567 — GEAR ASSY, FWD
Pinion #32 — 313343 — 313343 — PINION
Gasket #23 — 313446 — 313446 — ''O'' RING, PROPELLER SHAFT

Thanks for your time and help!
