Evinrude to mercury swap

I have an 87 stratos 181 that had a evinrude 150 on it that blew up and right now it has a 50hp Johnson. I have a 79 mercury 140hp tower motor I want to put on it so my question is can I use the controls in my boat but get new cable for it or will I have to change controls completely or what would I need here to make this motor work on this boat.

You need Merc control. Call Tim's Outboard in Hackensack MN and tell them what your up to. They will get you set up and guide you what to do. 218 682 2331 Talk to Mike or Dan. You will be very happy to deal with my good friends there. Since both motors are 6 cyl. you won't have to set the tach any different either.
