Is there any way to fit the tilt/trim set up from a 1985 150 hp on to a 1979 85 hp, both Evinrude. I have the complete motor o maybe change the whole mounting bracket?

The 2 motors have the same unit mechanically.--------The motors are different with the 79 being a 3 wire motor and the 85 is a 2 wire motor.

???????-----------Swap the entire thing over.-----Hydraulic unit and the electrical bits too.--------------Jury rigging here will not work !

OK, Also when take the two transom brackets apart on each side of it, there is a big threaded rod going through them. I mean where the steering rod goes through. Does the two transom mounts just slid off or are the threaded on? I hope you understand what I mean.

That'd be the tilt tube. It's only threaded on either end. Where the nuts are. Smooth where it passes through the brackets. Remove the load on it and you can tap it out.

Are you sure you need to do this to swap the trim?

It's shouldn't be that hard to get the steering rod out, is not an ultra tight fit to begin with. Just bang it out, when it bottoms out in the tube use a rod of some sort to continue pushing it through, spray some penetrating oil in there during the process.

Keep on soaking it, wiggling it and tapping on it. Be patient. You could also try some heat on it with a Mapp Gas torch.

I'd work on freeing/removing the steering rod before replacing the tilt tube. Hard to believe it could be stuck so bad. Can you saw it off flush and pound it through with something?

Replacing the tilt tube is kinda a pita. You gotta keep it aligned straight. And deal with bushings and shims and washers and what not.

Much less frustrating to keep it intact

Its real rusty inside the tube. I have been pounding the heck out of it with a small sledge. Slow n steady wins the race I guess.

Stay on it with PB/penetrating oil. See if you can cobble up a way to keep oil on it constantly. "Dam" of some sort or mebbe a hunk of hose over the end?

Patience and copious amounts of penetrating oil go a long way when tearing one of these sob's apart.

Sure you can hurry and break chit off. But that just means a lot more work in the long run ...?

Well, I finally got it all apart. What a fun time that was. So my next question is, what is the purpose of that sending unit mounted on the side of the mounting bracket? I believe it is something to do with amount the motor can raise??? Can that be eliminated? I took mine off so it wouldn't get broken with all the pounding and both screws broke off, naturally!!! Do I really NEED that???

That's a sending unit for a trim gauge to tell you the position of the motor. I've never used one as I always used my "ears" when underway. You don't really need it.

Ditto - if they do anything to annoy me I take them off. The Johnson I've been working on I took that and the wiring for it off to remove the clutter (there's a harness that goes from there up to the back of the engine, two wires black & white I believe). When I want to know the trim I turn around and look.

Actually on my merc's with the digital smartcraft I even unplug the stupid things because they make the screen change to trim level every time I hit the button (instead of the RPM & Temp that I really want to see).
