Evinrude motor plug question

" I have a 25 horse Evinrude that has shaky wire where the wire from the ignition goes into the motor plug. I taped the dry rotted wires with electrical tape, that has worked. I was wondering if there is a replacement plug that can be hard wired or soldered on to the wire. I have about two feet of extra wire, wire-tied under the transom, so that will not be a problem. The plug in question has six pins. Thanks in advance for any help. "

" David, I don't know abou

" David, I don't know about the connector availability. But I urge you to replace every inch of wire that is original. If some of it is rotten, then soon enough the rest will be also. Not that big a job and much better than swimming home. I used a couple different kind of connectors, turning some around gender wise so that it would be difficult to ever connect the wrong wires together. I too tried taping the wires that looked bad but ended up with an engine fire on the lake. Not exactly how I wanted that day to turn out, but at least I was fortunate enough to make it back in one piece. "

" Stu, thanks for the response

" Stu, thanks for the response. Is it possible to find the whole wire, from ignition switch to the motor anywhere? I would rather do that, but am not sure if that wire is available for a 1976 Evinrude. "

"David..... You don't say

"David..... You don't say what year the 25hp is. Are you speaking of the main instrument cable that goes from the control box or console to the engine... and is that cable connector at the engine end round or rectangular, and is it black or red?

" Joe, the motor is a 1976 Evi

" Joe, the motor is a 1976 Evinrude 25 h.p. The cable from the ignition switch has six conductors (2 kill, battery, solenoid, choke, and run?). There is also another cable that houses the thicker gauge wire for the power. The two cables join together into the one plug at the motor. The plug at the motor is black and rectangular at the end. Thanks for the response. "

"David.... There is no "ru

"David.... There is no "run" wire. If that wire is purple, it would be an accessory 12v lead that supplys power to the warning horn, possibly a tachometer, etc. If it's not purple, what color is it?

If you can obtain a new replacement harness from a OMC dealership (and can afford it), that would be the proper way to go. However, that route is expensive. You could replace the wires, one by one to avoid confusion, and at the engine where the instrument cable (harness) meets the engine harness, have each wire set up with a insulated "Pin and Socket" connection, then insulate and wrap the entire connection assy so that it is entirely insulated.

This would allow you to unplug the instrument cable from the engine cable in the future without cutting any wires.
