Evinrude Mate 2HP, no telltale?

I recently acquired a small 1974 2HP, the engine seems to be working fine, starts easily and runs ok. Opened up the lower unit, the impeller and other things are in decent shape. But just doesn't seem to have telltale? There are four holes in the lower front(or maybe two I forgot), wet mist rush out of them while running, but no visible water. Is this normal?

Thats right no tell tale but you should get a mist or spray from the exhaust back pressure relief ports.

If all is well you should be able to touch and maintain brief finger contact with any part of the power head , except the cylinder head near the spark plugs and the exhaust cover plate.

If its too hot to touch, or there are signs of paint discolouration or there is steam coming out of the relief ports it's overheating.

Awesome! Thank you guys, now I can relax. vics: your description is spot on! the block does get kind of hot, but I can still rest my fingers on it for like a second or so, no paint loss visible.

A " new to you " motor needs a new impeller.-----Cheap and easy to do yourself.-------If the motor should overheat there is nothing on it to prevent destroying itself !
