"My son and I just bought an Evinrude outboard and I would like to know the year, hp, and vitals from the engine ID tag.

The numbers are as follows:

E35TELCRR ( Model )
E0381401 ( serial )

The motor looks like it is in great shape, but has not been started in 3 years. It came on a 1989 Smokercraft Bigfisherman 16. The boat and trailer are also in very good shape. Any help with the motor ID is very appreciated

Thanks, George Nochta Santee, CA"

"Okey Dokey vics thanks.........we'll keep you posted on the steps of checking this motor out and getting it ready to go after three years of being garaged. Georgen Santee, CA"

"Vics,

We took the motor into the shop to get it checked out. The mechanic said that he thought it was in very good shape, but would know more after the compression and ignition was checked. He also said that this 35 was one of the best OMC made. We are going to have the water pump replaced, a carb redo, primer replaced ( broken ), all gas lines replaced, lower end oil changed, and new plugs. Will check back after the motor is out of the shop. Thanks again for all your help........Georgen Santee, CA"

"Vics, we received very good news from the mechanic concerning the condition of this 1984 35 hp Evinrude. All work has been completed and the motor is in tip top shape. Beside the obvious water pump replacement the engine's primer pump was cracked and had to be replaced. Thanks again for helping us ID this outboard. I'll be back in touch soon. I have a older Evinrude 70 hp on a classic bass boat that we will be restoring soon and will probably need some advise and guidance with it........Georgen Santee, CA"

"My son and I have discovered

"My son and I have discovered another problem with this outboard after taking the boat out for a shake down cruise. The remote shifting mechanism does not always put the motor in reverse. The remote is mounted directly to the aluminum hull close to the top of the gunwale on the starboard side. The aluminum flexes a bit when shifting. It goes into forward from neutral every time, but reverse gives us a problem. We found if the operator braces his right knee against the hull right below the remote, the shifter on the motor goes into reverse. What would be the best way to solve this problem?

"at the risk of suggesting the obvious, maybe a triangular brace to the gunwale or a heavier alum backing plate on the area where the shifter assy attaches?"

"Thanks Bruce that's where we are leaning. We'll post when we come up with the final solution. Happy Holidays, George"

"welcome to marineengine!

eddie, you will get more direct help if you start a new thread, post year and model, and tell how long the prob has been occurring ............not to mention you could get lost under someone esles thread.

you need to clean/rebuild the carb, check for fuel/air leaks in all the lines and fittings, and try pumping the primer bulb when it dies out.

if pumping the bulb helps your fuel pump is going out, if not i would bet a $.05 its a dirty carb.

also check for water in the fuel----get a sample from the lowest part of the tank----water will look like heavy bubbles in the bottom of the container."
