Evinrude hydro electric shift parts

I took my lower unit off my 60 horse 1971 Evinrude today to change the water pump and when I put it back on I didn’t have a neutral. I played with it a little bit, and almost think it was a bad connection. It is working now. How often does the solenoids go bad in the lower unit? Are they easy to come by if they need replaced? I have also seen new Hydro electric pumps. That is what is in the lower unit correct?

Those solenoids are not nearly as troublesome as people seem to think they are. Far more troublesome are the push button switch and wiring. And dirty gear oil.

Agreed these units are very simple and very reliable.-----Of course some folks will run them with a bit of water in them and that is a no , no.---Good used parts can be easy to find.---A lot depends on your location.
