"My 1988 200 rude recently has trouble staying in the "starting" mode.
While I hold the key, it turns over, but only for a couple seconds, then stops trying to turn over. Still holding the key over.
I can get it sometimes to run in that short time, but otherwise, I have to keep turning the key to crank it. Is it the starter ? Is it worth fixing ? Runs great."

"This could be few things. The same thing happened to me this spring. It was the starter selonoid. The copper lug on the inside of the selonoid wore to a point that the contact would not touch. I fixed this myself by drilling out the rivets that hold the lower cover to the selonoid and I rotated the copper lug 180 degrees.I put some screws in where the rivets were, and it should be good for years to come. Battery and battery cable connections could cause this also.
I do this on a regular basis. Remove the cable end to the starter and the selonoid, then sand or file the ends and the nuts, then reinstall.
The "main" electrical plug could have a bad connection. That is the big rubber plug with about 8 wires going through it.It's on the port side of the engine, beside the starter. These sometime get a little corrosion.Pull it apart, check for corrosion, clean, reinstall."
