Evinrude ercob 8 hp balks with throttle increase

This 1985 motor started and ran great the first start up this Spring. Now it just kind of idles or quits, if the throttle is increased it sometimes backfires and/or quits. Tried adjusting the mixture but didn't work. I've had this problem before with this motor.

Anybody have any ideas on this one?

Assuming you have the normal/previous compression and ignition/spark.........

That's a typical description of a fouled carburetor. Remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor.
