"Hey guys,

"Hey guys,
I have a 1987 140 Looper with what now seems like major issues.
I took the Boat out today all was working well, made one stop after a 1/2 hour run at 4 to 5000 RPM, it acted really weird and will not start acted like a dead battery.
Waited a few minutes and she fired right up.
Ran for another 1/2 hour trolling and WOT at times.
Around 4000 RPM when it suddenly started to die down with a loud rattling sound, I immediately shut it down.
I try to start it and its making a rattling sound like something is loose inside and it will not start, I did a compression check on the 1 and 3 cylinder both shows around 60 I am completely stump all the plugs looks ok well oiled it did not overheat since I saw it running at 140 degrees."

"I bin readin for a month.

"I bin readin for a month.
Are you the guy that swappped parts for 8 months then got a book and fixed youe engine all by yourself?
If so, swap the stator."

"Outboard Fox, You are so righ

"Outboard Fox, You are so right, Just like a coward you created a new ID just to tell me swap my Stator ?
Its beyond Stator this time dummy, I will fix it, no thanks to you !
He who laugh last laughs best.
The swapping parts for 8 months was a so call outboard fool like yourself that made me learn!"

"Thanks, Morten I will pull th

"Thanks, Morten I will pull the heads like you recommend. I may just buy a re-build and keep my engine as spare since it has all new parts. I am still mystified at the fact I pre-mix and heat sensors on both heads and yet this looper damaged ?"

"Morten,
I removed both heads

"Morten,
I removed both heads no damages not a single scratch or broken rings any idea ?
Could it be broken reeds ?"

"Not much else that may cause

"Not much else that may cause that compression reading. You never gave the values for 2 & 4?
When pulling down to check the reads, remember that the carbs on Port side of engine are the ones for the Stb side cyls."

"Morten I will remove the enti

"Morten I will remove the entire throttle body this weekend and take peek at the rods and bearings etc, I am thinking the darn flywheel is spun, just a hunch at this point.
I will not bet the farm on the compression gauge or the process in which it was done at this point.
more to follow.
I have a complete Tilt & Trim, LU, Mid section all as spare for this engine with the exception of a power head.
I will purchase a complete rebuild power head if I have to, pull this one off and have fun in the winter in my garage. I always wanted to pull the heads anyways to gauge its condition, I am very please with what I see so far. No worn sleeve or damage pistons etc

"The 60 psi on both cylinders

"The 60 psi on both cylinders on one bank, if the cylinders and pistons look perfect as you suggest, that indicates that the head gasket has blown between the upper and lower cylinder causing a blowover effect.

However, that rattling you mention is another story. Let us know what you find when you, as Morten instructs, look into that crankcase.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:

"it not wanting to start could

"it not wanting to start could of been because it was hydro locking, thats when water gets into the cyl and can not be compressed, if that happened then it would of acted like a dead batt"

"Guys,
How much play should t

"Guys,
How much play should the pistons have in the sleeve ? All pistons seems very very loose. Its it possible the previous owner install the wrong size pistons. I never did a compression check on this engine since I own it, It had a history of wrong parts on it , lower unit etc. Is there a way I can know if the engine was re-bore and the dope head install standard pistons?"

"Bruce you may be on to someth

"Bruce you may be on to something there. I am in the process of tearing into it. The infamous flywheel removal is under way its stuck just like it did last year broke my puller stay tune. MIT graduates design got to love it.
Just like my Dad's Bulldozer our Caterpillar needed a hydraulic puller to remove the sprocket and the Allis Chalmers is held in place with a nut. Both American made, however the engineers went to different IV league.
In short the Flywheel is the dumbest thing so far I see on an Evinrude !"

"i real good trick for pulling

"i real good trick for pulling the wheel is put some good pressure on the bolts then rap on the cntr of the puller with a hammer the vibs will make it pop off, also before doing a tear down if it were me I would just change out the head gasket then run it and see how it does you might be doing a lot of work for nothin"

"Morten,
Sorry I did remove t

"Morten,
Sorry I did remove the intake can't see any problems so far. When I crank the engine one can clearly hear the knocking sound at this point I have to tear into it no ?"

"As You have both in-take and

"As You have both in-take and heads off, do the following:
Turn the engine so #1 piston is half way up -crank is in about 90 degree. Then wiggle flywheel and check if any movement in crank, but not on piston.
Continue with the rest of the cyl's. That might give an idea if a wrist pin failure or big end failure."

look at your cylinder skirts s

look at your cylinder skirts sounds like a skirt broke the can crack into the ring indent causing it to loose compression and the broke off parts will clatter as they become chewed up by the crank wick also might explain why it took a few trys to get it to turn over.

"Found it, Issue from a previo

"Found it, Issue from a previous re-build, both bolts on the connecting rod was loose very loose, the lower bearing spun and then locked up as you can see in the photos.
At this point I am replacing the engine with re-build short block and move my parts over with new reeds etc.
