you probably have a rectifier only charging system on that motor which is unregulated..a fully charged reading on a battery is 12.7 volts with no charging...then when you start your motor after it runs at 2k rpm then you should see an increase on the meter above the 12.7....you really dont want to see above 14.8...if you did like we all do and put a new battery in a boat then you probably put a good one...on your charging system there is a known problem with sealed or gel batteries...you may see it on a nonsealed marine battery...the voltage may go to 16 plus volts and may go over 17 volts...you will lose the rectifier sooner or later with that condition...there is no internal discharge on these batteries and they will take whatever your unregulated system puts out....the are basicly two fixes....1.replace your rectifier with a regulator....2..go to the low amp hour battery called for in your owners manuel...they are hard to find....some guys also run a 12volt cooler or some additional load to help with the problem...
