Evinrude decarb question

" Joe, I keep hearing everyone

" Joe, I keep hearing everyone talking about decarbing their motors. I have a 1997 Evinrude 225 Vindicator that I purchased new in 1998 so I know the engine has never been decarbed. Is this some type of maintenance I should be performing regularly or possibly yearly? What are the benefits? If I need to do this, what product(s) should I purchase to do the job? Currently, the engine runs great, starts easy and never stalls or misses out. In fact, I am still running the original spark plugs that came in the engine, even though I double oiled thoughout the break in time. I was told that I would have to replace the plugs after break in because the double oiling would foul the plugs, although it doesn't appear so by the way it runs. I was thinking about changing the plugs for no other reason than the fact that they are going on 4 years old. But I kind of hate to change somethng that is working so well. I guess at the very least I might improve my mileage by swapping out the plugs. I would like to hear your response on the decarb process and if you think I need to change plugs. Thanks in advance. "Scott.... your spark plugs ar

"Scott.... your spark plugs are no doubt Champion QL77JC4 plugs (should be anyway). Look at the center electrode, holding the s/plug upside down and vertical. The electrode should be perfectly square (level across) and if so, it (they) are okay. If it has taken a sloped, beveled shape, replace it.

The decarb thing pertains to excessive carbon that might collect in the cylinders on top of the pistons and cylinder head. That varies from engine to engine due to different fuels, cheap oil, etc etc. You can get a reasonable probe type flashlight that has a extension whereas you can insert it into the cylinder via the spark plug hole to inspect for carbon. It doesn't hurt to run the solution through the carburetor throats as per the instructions, but if it's not needed, why bother.
