Evinrude big twin impeller replacement

I am replacing the impeller on my big twin, I have unbolted the lower unit, but it only drops down about 2 inches. I can see the impeller housing, but I cannot release the lower unit. It feels like the shifting mechanism is holding it in place. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Bill

There is a cover on the side of the upper housing held in place with 2 screws. Just remove cover to access the shift rod coupling and TAKE OUT one of the 2 coupling screws. Your ready to go.
