Evinrude 8 hp 2 stroke, reinstall lower unit, cannot align shift shaft

I'm having the same problem. After putting it back together it will not shift. 1992 Evinrude 15 HP. Any pointers?

Did you make sure it was in the detents?Aso try turing the prop while shifting if you did.

I sure believe the linkage went together correct...but even with engine running it will not shift. It started in reverse and would not shift out.

I removed the lower unit in Forward gear, and afterwards I must have bumped against the shifter and selected Neutral. I didn't realize how far out I needed to pull the shifter again to select Forward, so I was fiddling back and forth with only Neutral and Reverse trying to get the lower unit in. Finally, I looked more closed and realized my problem and that puppy slipped back in
