Evinrude 70hp wscorched cylinder

I've got a 1984 evinrude 7

I've got a 1984 evinrude 70hp. Shop just called and said one of the carbs was running lean and it scorched the cylinder. 2) cylinders are fine. 1) has little compression. Mechanic suggested that I look for another motor. Can I rebuild this or am I out of luck? If not will I be able to use my tilt and controls with an Evinrude 115hp of about the same vintage? Should I stay away from older motors?

"If you want to do the work yourself and want it in a reasonable amount of time, you will have to go with OEM parts.

A new piston will run about 100 bucks, 20 or so for rings. If the connecting rod/bearings are gone could be looking at another 300 or so (for the 1 rod). Assorted gaskets, sealer etc, maybe another 50. If the cylinder can be cleaned up with a hone, not so bad, otherwise off to the machine shop to have it taken down a bit...

You have to decide for yourself. If you didn't need the motor anytime soon and wanted to turn it into a project, watching the recylclers/ebay and the like you may be able to pick up most of what you need over a period of months for alot less.

To have this done at a shop would easily double the cost.

A similar vintage motor in good shape could be picked up for under 1000 in most cases.

A mid-90's would go in the 1000 - 1500 range.

There is nothing wrong with motors from the 80's or 90's if they have been taken care of and they sell for about 1/4 the cost of a new one...
