"Problem started with being unable to select reverse gear, cable adjustment allowed selection of reverse but no forward. Fitted new cable and still can only adjust to either no forward or else no reverse, the cable setting where both forward and reverse are available cannot be found.
Any ideas?

"You did not state model year, but here are some possibilities:
Worn bushings in the shift linkage at the engine.
Worn remote control not giving enough travel.
Then a more serious one:
Damage in the gear case. It might even be the rear bearing housing has come loose and moved back-words. If possible, remove the housing and check the big bearing for the reverse gear."

"I had the same problem on my 1976 johny 70 hp. All I had to do was grease the shift zerk to the shift arm in the motor. Then it would fall into the gears no problem. I am usually not this lucky, hope you can be too! Brian"
 
Had a very similar problem wit

Had a very similar problem with my 1985 E70. It was not the engine or cables at all. A pivot screw in the control box had come adrift. Easily fixed. Hope that helps.
