Evinrude 60hp Engine Noise

My neighbor's 1983 Evinrude E60ELCTB 60hp started making an odd sound when in gear, hear the video here

It does not make the noise in neutral. I checked the lower unit to see if it had oil and it was full and had no water.

Any advice?

Does it make the noise with the prop removed.------The gears are all engaged and turning when the motor is running in nuetral.----Try with prop off.

As instructed, I took the prop off, and ran the engine out of the water with flusher, it did not make the noise while in gear. What's the prognosis doctor?

The diagram for the prop shows four loose parts #71 Thrust Bushing, #72 Spacer, #73 Prop nut, #74 Cotter pin. This engine is missing the spacer #72, it has all the other parts. I do not see any rub marks on the prop the prop # is 391668 14x13 3 blade aluminum OEM, though its been cut down to like 12" diameter.

Could not install #72 Spacer, there is no room on the splines to place it. The propeller covers all the splines area.

Well , it fits on every other motor.-----So wrong spacer in front.---After market prop ?---Something wrong with prop hub.----Your local shop can figure it out in minutes.

The prop is an Evinrude #391668 14x13 3 blade aluminum OEM, but its been cut down to like 12" diameter. It's likely the hub length is too long for this lower unit's propeller shaft, the prop is too big. Will have to find the right size prop which is either a 12.25" x 15"pitch, or 11 3/4 x 17" pitch. We're looking for a used prop locally to try it out.

I installed a new prop, an aluminum Turning Point Hustler Prop 21311510, 12 1/4" x 15" pitch with a #12 hub kit. It is the prop size recommended for this size of boat and engine. It is for a 3.5" gearcase (the prop we took off was for a 4 1/4" diameter gearcase, the hub of the new prop fits inside the old one!)

Everything now fits properly. I'll post again the results once my neighbor takes it out for a test run.

The neighbor finally was able to take the boat out and it still makes the same noise. He says it sounds like it is coming from the head.

What's next?

I guess there is something wrong in the powerhead.----I am not there to listen to it.----Compression test may help here.----Check for loose bearings through sparkplug hole.

I'll take a compression reading and look through the spark plug hole.

I can rev it up in neutral and it does not make the noise, it is only when it is in gear and in the water. It did not make the noise in gear out of water.

I changed the gear oil three times with automotive Valvoline 80-90 gear oil (that's what I had) the boat being used like 3 hours. It was very black and the grime stuck to the bottom of the pan, the first and second time. The third time I changed it, it was gray and poured right off the pan and into the waste drum. After the third change I put in BRP Hi-Vis. I didn't see any metal on the magnetic bottom plug at any time.
