Evinrude 6 starting but not running

I have a Evinrude 6 hp 1979 which starts but refuses to run. I have replaced the spark plugs and cleaned the carburetor twice. It starts for about 2 second and then immediately dies. The fuel filter is not clogged. It is a 2 stroke and has new fuel. The fuel is making it into the carburetor bowl and the jet looked clean. I don’t have a rebuild t kit to clean the mixture nozzles completely but I cleaned them the best I could with a neddle. When I first started it, it would idle but when I opened the choke it would stall out now it doesn't run at all. All the forum post I’ve read have recommended cleaning the carburetor.

Unfortunately I don’t know. I don’t have a gauge to measure.
Im going to rebuild the fuel filter and see if that helps. I’ll also look into ordering a gauge. Thanks

If by fuel filter.... there's nothing to that but a bit of gauze, you mean the fuel pump take care to note exactly how it is assembled as you take it apart or you'll have a difficult job figuring out how to put it back together again.

You will find some advice on overhauling the fuel pumps on LeeRoy's ramblings at
http://leeroysramblings.com/Outboard Motor Related/OMC outboard related articles.html Read this before you tear into the pump.

BUT if the fuel pump is faulty you should be able to keep it going by repeatedly squeezing the fuel line bulb .. Give that a try before you pull the pump apart.
With a full carb bowl it should run for much longer that 2 seconds, even if no more fuel gets through, before it dies

But before you tear anything apart check that you have two good sparks. They should jump an air gap of 7/16 inch.

Report the compression figures as soon as you have them.

Did it run good before? Was it stored a long time? Like Mr. Vic says, the carb bowl is full of fuel, it will run more like 20 or 30 seconds, not only 2.

When you cleaned the carburetor did you remove the expansion plug which is part no. 0306442 shown in the schematic under item no. 10. I cleaned one of my carbs on a 3 hp Johnson 2 times including putting it in an electronic cleaner and it still didn't get rid of the trash that was under the plug. I removed the expansion plug and cleaned it and it runs like a new one now.

You can remove it with a center punch by lightly and carefully tapping a dent in it and then pry it out with the end of the center punch. I say tap lightly because if you drive it hard you can break something if the punch goes all the way though and hits the body of the carb. Some people drill a hole in the plug and then pry it out but I didn't want any more little pieces of metal in my carb than were already there.

You can reinstall the expansion plug which comes in all the carb kits with a blunt flat end punch about the same diameter as the plug. Just hit it until it flattens out the concave shape plug.

Good luck to you.
