Evinrude 50 hp won't idle correctly.

I bought a boat last week with what i think is a 1990 Evinrude 50.

When I went to test the boat it would not plane. The seller thought he had done something as he said it was not idling right and he tried adjusting some screws on the carbs.

He had a outboard shop come out and fix it. They said one carb was clogged so they put in a rebuild kit. the bill said they put in the rebuilt kit 2x..not sure if same carb or if they meant the 2nd carb. New plugs , a leaky fuel line and it still would not plane. Finally I got a call that it was fixed ..I asked what it was and seller said something to do with the "condenser".

When I picked up the boat I asked if he had more details and he said the shop said something was grounding out the condenser.

I tested it the next day and the boat runs strong , but it still does not idle correctly. It cranks fine with the idle lever but once you put it in gear it goes dead if you don't shift into gear and get it going. It sounds like it might be missing at very low rpm but once a little bit of throttle it runs fine.

any ideas what this could be?

Thanks.

????????------There is no condenser on that ignition system !!------------Unless they are talking about a capacitor in the powerpack.

Well I think they were talking about the coil, but I can't say for sure. A lot has happened since my first post. The next time I tested the boat, it actually idled ok at first but would not plane till I held in the primer(choke) button. Did that for about a minute and then it was ok other than the idle. After that I ended up changing the fuel lines, filter, manifold and fuel pump. So far it now planes and the idle is better but not like I would expect. A friend knows a former omc shop and they told him these motors are known to always have idle problems-something because they are long stroke motors . I did a search on google and yea I see posts like mine all over the place with the same problem. Even brand new ones. Some are able to fix them , sometimes not, but I don't want to throw money at it if it cant be fixed.

So as long as the motor remains reliable I am going to just live with it..
