"High,

I have an Evinrude 4hp 2 stroke that won't start. Has spark on both cylinders. seems to have compression. Have cleaned the carb, though jets were loose, don't know jet settings. Petrol is clean and flowing to float chamber, all fuel lines seem clear; fuel is from gravity tank on engine. Had it running for about 30 seconds after many pulls of cord, but died out and won't restart. Have repeated carb clean and fuel line checks. Can anybody advise please?

Model is BE4BRLETB

Thanks,

Shep65"

"You will find instructions for setting carb needles on the "Engine frequently asked questions" board at iboats http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4
(Only a slow speed one to adjust though!)

But are you absolutely sure that the carb passages and jets are all clean?

You are sure the sparks are really good and that the plugs are also good or preferably new.

A compression test would verify that the compressions are good.

If compression and the ignition are all OK it should be possible to get it to start and run briefly if some fuel is sprayed into the carb intake.

Float level correct?

UK based?"

"Thanks for getting back guys. Have definitely cleaned all passages and jets. Plugs are clean and sparking well. However, they are dry after lots of pulls. Indicates no fuel getting through as far as I can see. Can't see how to adjust float level, unless you have to tweak the hinge tab; will have another look at that during the week. Will also spray some carb cleaner through as recommended, and see what I get. Main jet is screwed in until nipped tight, about 3 threads showing at top. Pilot screw is screwed fully into bottom of main jet. I've tried different positions for the jet, without success. Idle jet (on back of carb) is about 1.5 turns out. Thanks. Shep65"

"Appear to be getting some fuel through, though can't even get a cough out of engine now. Reed valves are clear and appear to be working ok. Tried spraying some fuel into the carb, still nothing (don't have a very fine sprayer though, more like dribbled fuel in). So, apart from a better sprayer, is there anything else you guys think may be worth trying? What's the likely hood of it being as serious as crank case seals please?

Been round all the bases again, sparks good, fuel clean and flowing, jets clear, float seems OK.

Thanks,

Shep"

"Try pulling plugs out and pull start to see if you see fuel vapor coming out of plug holes. If so you may have flooded the cylinders. In whicc try starting until there is no visible vapor put plugs back in a d try to start.

I'm no mechanic, but just went thru this same scenario last week.

Good Luck"

"I put new plugs in my engine the other day and guesswhat - one was a dud. Caused me no end of grief, but at least my engine had an overhaul as a result - cleaned carb, set points, etc. Check your points."

"I'm trying to check the plug type. The model number of the engine is BE4BRLETB, 1993 I believe. The plugs it has are NGK B7HS 10. Can anybody confirm the engine year and plug type please?

Thanks,

"I just had the same problem with my 9.9 Mariner. Cleaned out the carb twice, pulled it till my arm fell off, checked the fuel for water, etc, etc. Gave up in discust.
Then today I had a tinker around with it again, had a sniff of the fuel, smelled more like vinegar than fuel, so I dumped the tank and filled with fresh fuel, 3 pulls and away it went!
Must have been stale fuel. Maybe worth a try in this case?"

"OK, tried new clean fuel and new plugs NGK BRH6S compatible to Champion QL77JC4 as far as my local supplier can ID. Still won't fire! Purchased a manual, lots to read. Sprayed fuel and even Bradex Easy Start direct into carb, still won't fire. Definitely getting fuel through. Can anybody advise setting / position for main jet and pilot screw, accessed from float bowl? Gather from manual this engine is fixed timing, electronic ignition, so no points etc. Engine has run for a few seconds previously, so presume it's not a timing issue; but can't get anything now. Rebuilt a few 2 strokes over the years, never had this amount of reluctance to start unless timing was way off or crank bent. Fuel is burning, checked by positioning plugs just outside holes, can get flash or flame depending on setting of main jet, bit of a severe test! Grateful for any further advice before I start major strip down. Thanks, Shep"
