Evinrude 4hp 1983 E4BRCTA - need some help

Hello folks,

first of all I want to say hi! Very glad I can become a part of this community. English is not my native language but I promise to do my best to be well understood.

Let me get straight to the point here. I have recently been given an Evinrude outboard, 4hp, 1983 E4BRCTA (made in Belgium). The thing has not been run for at least 12 years. After some quick checks (spark, carb, etc.) it fired up with the 3rd pull! This has surprised me so much I decided to do a full restoration of the unit and keep it as my backup motor. It has a great compression and the overall condition is really decent given the age. I managed to get a new prop as well as a prop hub and some other minor parts. However there are still some things I am missing and I am totally unable to find them anywhere in Europe. I was able to locate them in the US/Canada but overseas shipping is a real nightmare these days. Not only does it cost a fortune, no one is really able to offer reasonable delivery time frames.

Here it is, the day I got it:

First of all if anyone here owns this motor could you please post some pictures of the carb area? I am particularly interested in the control knobs for low (trolling) speed as well as the choke/fuel on-off.

According to the parts diagram I need: two 0328569 KNOB,Choke & low speed

These are just impossible to find anywhere in the EU. I messaged a ton of people parting out their outboards and none of them had the controls available.

If any of you guys here happen to have this knob I would be really grateful if you could provide the measurements. I have a 3D printer as well as an access to CNC machines so it would be no problem for me to fabricable it.

Another thing would be:

0316751 SCREW,Engine cover

Again, I need some measurements for it.

If anyone here is interested I made myself a set of decals for this model. These are 1:1 HQ decals ready to printed. Please PM me your email and I will send you a high res pdf file.

Thank you!
Bob

PS: oh.. and a user man for this outboard would be awesome, please let me know if you have it and willing to share.

The knobs should be available

The top one is the idle mixture adjustment

The bottom one is the combined choke and fuel tap

There is no trolling speed adjustment as such but the idle speed can be adjusted with the screw on the cam follower on the side of the carb. Dont touch that though unless you have to because the plastic gets brittle with age and is easily broken

The engine cover screw is no longer available as a spare. I expect the original was an American thread ( UNC ?) but you should be able to find something, and a suitable nut to fit, in a metric size in a hardware or DIY store in Europe

The owners manuals are available from https://www.outboardbooks.com/ (at a price) but re not available on line. Perhaps you'll find one on eBay if you are very lucky

You dont say where you are exactly but you should be able to get parts ( including the control knobs) from Outboards Direct ( aka Oakley marine ) in the UK ( Brighton) http://www.outboards-direct.co.uk/

The (Seloc) manual on the boatinfo website may be useful ... sorry this forum will not let me post a link.

http://www.outboards-direct.co.uk/ does not have the control knobs in stock. Already checked with them. If only I had measurements I'd 3D print a million of them for under a dollar.

The engine cover screw - impossible to find in Europe. I could probably find a replacement in a local hardware store, but I'd wanna keep as close to original parts as I can. I am still hoping someone here has it and will be able provide exact measurements. If not I will just machine it on a lathe to make it look similar.

I have another question:

I want to sandblast/powder coat the engine cover. How bad of an idea it is, to remove the screw holding the pull start assembly? I truly hate dealing with springs. I have a strange feeling that the second I remove the screw the spring is gonna pop out flying into the lower earth's orbit. Another way to go would be to use a paint stripper and spray paint it. I'd however prefer to sand blast the living hell out of it and powder coat it.
