"Hi everyone! Im trying again

"Hi everyone! Im trying again to tune my engine "1986 40hp" and unable to hit the nail. The engine at full throttle runs great but when going slow or mid, the engine runs rough, I suspect the problem is adjustments between carbs and ignition plate "I think". What is the timing for idle?? 4 degrees? I think this should be done to proceed with the other adjustments. In water, I pulled off the cover and when going at mid revs, I manually opened more the carbs in the linkage and it runs clean but the cam is about one inch behind the carb linkage, does the cam needs advance? please help me here!! If someone here still have service manual regarding this tuning section please send me a copy to [email protected] Thanks!!!"

"Whaler..... The throttle link

"Whaler..... The throttle linkage between the carburetors must be set so that there is no tension on it at dead idle, that is the throttle butterflies start to open at the same time and close at the same time.... and at idle both buterflies are absolutely closed.

Spark plugs should be Champion QL77JC4 plugs, gapped at .040.

I have no idea what you've already performed on that engine, if you've changed the timing, adjusted the sync wrong, etc. If you haven't changed any of those adjustments, they should be alright.

However..... The throttle roller itself should be approximately 3/8" in diameter. If it is smaller, I would suspect that the outer covering (clear plastic) has broken away from the smaller black inner portion.... in which case, purchase another roller.

There is a scribe mark on the cam, perhaps two marks close together. The throttle roller should contact the bottom scribe mark when the mark is dead center with the roller, not before or after.

At that point (scribe mark/roller), the idle timing should be 2° to 4° BTDC.

Now, have you completely dismantled the carburetors, cleaned them thoroughly and rebuilt them using complete carburetor kits? Have you manually cleaned the two brass high speed jets and also the thin brass tubing that leads from the bottom portion of the top carburetor body up to the slow speed fuel passageway? If not, I'd suggest that you do so.

Have you checked the compression? What is it? Have you tested the spark (with both s/plugs removed) to see if it will jump a 7/16" gap on both cylinders with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP!, If not, do so. These two area are the initial points to check in the trouble shooting procedure. Let us know what you find in these areas.

Now the above being said..... You entered your post/question on 05/31/08 and entered what appears to be a cloaked scarcastic entry the following day. There are times when a reply simply take a little more time than that and patience is required. Many of us are up in age and contribute our time when we can and answer questions as intelligently and as soon as possible. Some of us may suddenly be taken ill or have loved ones in a hospital or nursing home and of course any of these issues takes precedent over anything else.

If you intend to keep that engine for awhile, I'd suggest that you purchase a service manual from this site as there are many aspects of that engine that simply couldn't be answered in minute detail. We do what we can but we don't have the answer to everything."
