Evinrude 40 hp stuck in forward

I have an evinrude 40 hp and its stuck in forward the stick will move but in forward neutral and reverse it goes forward also the rev leave makes the propeller go in a forward motion anyone got any ideas.

Ill get the model number the night was working fine and then took it out after about half an hour stuck in forward and hasn’t come out. Looked at the engine all the motions are fine so im thinking it’s the shift selector but I just have no clue is there anything in the engine that controls the gears other than the mechanism you can clearly see at the side?!

The shifting is done in the lower unit itself------------linkages / connectors-----------anything could be wrong in there.-----------Anybody change the oil recently ??-Any water in the gearcase ??
 
nothing changed recently was serviced last year but only the engine! I had to take it apart last year to change the impeller at the end of the season. Its an OMC unit are they easily worked with or would a new unit be the best option? As for water in the gear casing could be a possibility how would i be able to tell?!
 
When you re-assembled after the impeller work did you line up the notches in the lower and upper shift rods when installing the bolts in the connector ????--------------Is it still connected there ????
 
Im going to take it out at the weekend and see you think maybe one of the bolts have come off and thats why its not selecting?!i remember it was quite akward to get to so im thinking the bolt wasnt tight enough!!what would be my next point off call if thats no it! i have never fully stripped the lower unit and from the diagram i recall looking at when i changed the impeller im pretty sure i dont want to!!
