Evinrude 40 hp shuts down when put in gear

I had recently changed the electric shift wiring harness on my 1963 evinrude lark 5 ... put it all back together and now it shuts down when I put it in gear ... didn't do this before I changed the wiring any suggestions

Exactly what did you replace?

I suspect that your wiring is in error and you are shifting into both gears at the same time.

Just the wiring harness .... and the impeller while I was that far in

Could be possible it has never done that befor... maybe the rubber sleeve moved up and exposEd the wire

Probably have to tare it down again

Disconnect the shift wires behind the powerhead and see if it keeps running when you shift it. Needless to say, it won't actually go into gears with the wires dis-connected.
