Evinrude 4 stroke 70hp no reverse???

ok guys well my boat has been with out reverse for years. just grinds? was told by a mechanic years ago that i needed a new lower unit. well after thinking recently could it be something different? and my hyd trim doesnt work?? but more importantly id like reverse.

ohh yea its a early model like a 2000 or so forward works great

Disconnect the cable from the engine and try shifting directly on the shift arm. Note the angle of travel from neutral to it starts engaging in both forward and revers. If that angle is the same, your gearbox is probably OK, but either your shift cable needs adjustment , box is worn not giving sufficient stroke or your shift cable needs replacement.
