Evinrude 35 HP "Jerking" issue

Hi Everyone,

I have a 70s 35 HP Evinrude (Model 35753H). I've had it for about 6 years. Always starts great. Runs well at low speeds. In the last two years I'm getting a single jerk when I move the throttle to high speed (I use a power pilot for the controls). It doesn't happen instantaneously. It's as the motor is "winding up" and about 3/4 of the way to high speed. It isn't a minor jerk. Once the jerk happens though it runs fine. If I slow down and then rev it back up it happens again. What should I start looking at as the problem? Please note that I am not that familiar with outboard engines. I do a lot of automobile and tractor work though so am mechanically inclined. I'm just getting ready to winterize it so am just trying to get some ideas when I bring her out again next spring. Evinrude - 2018-10-05.jpg

Thanks in advance!

The lower unit is jumping out of and back into gear. Have you recently changed or adjusted the shift cable or performed other work?

The correct method of shifting is to quickly snap the engine into gear.... some boaters think they're taking it easy on the engine by gradually, slowly shifting into gear when actually they're causing damage to the shifter dog and the gear lobes that engage each other (rounding off the edges)... and that results in what you're experiencing.

With the engine off in forward gear slowly advance the throttle until the line on the throttle cam under the flywheel is center of the follower roller. At that point the carb should still be fully closed. As you advance the carb shoul just begin to open as the line passes center of the roller. You can get it exact if you put a long wire in a paperclip and clip it to the shaft on the carb. Then on the link rod is a collar with a screw. Loosen the screw and take your controls to WOT. With ope finger open the carb fully to its stop and then push the collar up yo the pivot pin under the flywheel and tighten the screw. It holds the carb fully open. Go back and double triple check your work and take it for a test spin.

The jerking clutch dog will get worse. Every time it jerks, it knocks off more material. Eventually, it will destroy the shift linkage also. Fix it before it does.
