I have a 35 hp evinrude 1976 and all of a sudden it started running rough and bogging down as I increased trottle! I took off the cover and there is an arc (hit and miss) at the top of the trottle adjustment. I have looked for the wire causing the problem but I cannot find it. Any help would be appreciated post here or email

"Howard.... I really don't understand the statement pertaining to the "hit and miss at the top of the throttle adjustment". I assume that you're saying that the ignition (spark) is jumping from some point to ground rather than following a course to the spark plug, but I have no idea as to what you mean by the "top of the throttle adjustment". I've encountered various problems with wires fraying, cracking etc and having the spark jump to ground but I don't know what wires you might be speaking of.

When a problem such as a ignition spark jumping to ground occurs, and it proves to be evasive, I have run those problem engines at night and the spark (and the problem area) would then reveal itself.

" Thanks Joe, The "hit and miss arc at the top of the trottle adjustment" means thew following: I took off the cover and got the engine going, then I looked around the engine (as it ran) to find the problem. While looking I notice a arc (blue colored spark) The location of this arc is as follows: From where the gas line plugs in just to the right of there, this is where the trottleis connected to the cable from the controller. If you follow the shaft up to the top (which would normally be under the cover, yet just below the flywheel) This is the location of the arc. This arcing occures each time the engine appears to miss and shocks the piss out of you if you are touching at the wrong time. I have checked ever wire and cannot find a frayed wire. Any ideas from this explaination? Your help would be appreciated.

"Howard.... Without actually having the engine sitting in front of me, and knowing the location of the arcing, there's nothing I could really add. Wherever that arcing is would have to be the trouble spot. There are only three wires leading from that armature plate (plate the points etc are attached to), a "Blue" wire and a "Blue/White" wire, both of which lead to the coils, and there's also a "Black" wire that leads to ground.

If that ground wire is missing or broken, it's possible to have a weird arcing from metal to metal. Bottom line advice is to keep looking as you're in the right area.
