Evinrude 33hp makes a clattering sound

Hello everyone,

I purchased a boat last year with a Evinrude 33hp, i'm guessing its something like a 68 model but i know they manufactured them for a fare while the same, anyway i had it running last year briefly and it seemed ok, it ticked over after it was at running temperature but it was brief, i put a new water pump housing in and impeller and i gave it a good clean up over winter, now its back on the boat, it starts fine first time but its making like a clattering / banging / wacking sound (hard to describe in words), i have cleaned and re-gaped the points, at high revs its does it less but low down its not so good, i don't think its terminal but more like timing or ignition.

since i have had it its only ever run in water

Any Evinrude / Johnson professionals out there that could help me?

PS, boat being craned in in 2days!!!

Are you mixing gas and oil at 50:1 ??-----Remove the 2 bypass covers on port side of the engine ( 6 screws each ) and inspect movement of pistons and rings.

hello, wow you are quick, thanks.

fuel was mixed by me correctly 50:1, i have removed the bypass covers and i think it looks good, rings seem fine and i can see the crank and that looks altogether from what little i can see of it.

if you search youtube for: Johnson Evinrude 33hp 1965 starting up

at about 34-37 seconds the engine makes the same sound as what i'm getting but mine is x10 worse.

to add: also there is more soot in the top chamber than there is in the bottom one and the same on the top spark plug too!

If your shift rods are connected by the standard brass shift connector... and the engine ran okay last year or whenever you ran it last... and this clattering has only appeared since you installed a new impeller... is it possible that the groove on one of those shift rods is not properly aligned with the bolt hold in the brass shift connector?

That might cause the shifter dog lobes to be hitting one of the gear lobes. That noise would travel right up the driveshaft, making it sound like a powerhead rod knock or something similar.

oh ok, thats a good idea, i'm going to check right now, i think i was pretty accurate when putting back together but there is not a lot of space in that little hole.

going to drain dawn my test tank not........................

ok the shift rod is fine, its totally in the correct position as it was last year and their is plenty of movement / travel between F.N.R so i don't think it can hit the lobes, i left our front door open and fumes have made there way into the house, wife is fuming too! oops.
