Few weeks back I took out the Father in Laws boat, which hasn't seen the water since 1997. We got new gas and brought it out to the lake. Started up & ran just fine, but didn't want to idle. He noticed that the gas line on the motor was weathered, and that the spark plug was loose from being stripped out.

So in the past week, we put in a spark plug insert, new spark plugs, and a new gas line. Took it out on the water yesterday, and now the motor won't even start, and only chugs for about two seconds.

Oh, and from what I took from the Serial Number, its an 1969

What are peoples thoughts on what I should do now? Or just bring it in to a professional?

Check the spark and compression. If you have both, I'd suspect a fouled carburetor... a common problem for a engine sitting for that length of time.

I don't know if it was just my luck. but my father in law came over, pulled it over today and it popped right off. We went out to the lake and it ran great the whole time we were on the water. We will see what the outcome is tomorrow!

Will a Carburetor gas treatment work on outboards? Or would it be better to get it cleaned by someone that knows what they are doing?
