Hi, recently I have received an Evinrude 1996 25HP from my father in-law and I’ve been slowly repairing it and I am completely new to boat repairs, apparently the boat has not run in 5 years.
When I try starting it and I push the choke back in it will start stalling out only if I leave the throttle in one position too long but if I start to give it gas it will stop, but I bring the throttle down it sputters out and dies on me. The engine seems to run fine only if I give it throttle but the engine will start smoking and sometimes poofs but it idles fine if I leave the choke pulled out and I can give it throttle with little to no smoke. Gummy/brown oil type substance is leaking out of the exhaust relief holes and I’m seeing oil in the water as well. I checked the carb and it looked fine, not dirty or rusted. Could it be an issue with my gas or is it my fuel pump?
