Driveshaft is vertical and the propeller shaft is horizontal.------Which one are you working on ?-----When the water pump is off the driveshaft pulls right out.-------Why are you replacing the driveshaft / pinion bearings ?

Salt water got to it. I am talking about driveshaft that has those bearings. I was going to go thru it and replace seals and bearings.
 
If you don't have a manual you better go to shop.evinrude.com and look up a parts diagram of your gear case.
 
Yes , all is down to bearing that are in upper housings. Could the bearing have come apart and binding inside.could not get photo to upload

All things being equal the shaft should have just slid out,right? I am going to replace all the bearings i just didnt want to mess up the drive shaft $$. Thanks for all the replies !

Got everything out of lower unit now. I am going to salvage the housing as it looks to be ok and go back with all new parts.One part that is hard to find is the pinion gear 0328313. At 200.00 + dollars its nuts. Has anyone seen one of these at a reasonable price,Thanks for looking ! Oh i meant to ask,is there not a water tube from pump to upper section ,i dont see one on diagram

???---Look at it , the " tube " is part of the exhaust housing.-------Cast right into the exhaust housing.-----Modern casting expertise is what it is.
